One of the places of visit in the province of Bolivar is the shrine to which believers from all over the country come especially in the celebrations that are celebrated to worship the Virgin Mary. Mons. Cándido Rada, the first bishop of Guaranda, is the manager of the construction of this sanctuary built on a ravine in the parish of La Magdalena in Chimbo.

The feast of the Virgen del Guayco takes place on September 8 of each year.

Creation date
The chapel was rebuilt in 1771, after the Colonel Corregidor of Guaranda of that time, Antonio Echeandía, received a cure. The chapel had a third remodeling in 1944, in charge of Father Villagómez.

Attractive
The physical work of this sanctuary is impressive.

• The Museum: in which wood fragments from the altarpieces and doors of the first chapel of the Guayco are exhibited, there are bells that some day ago rang in the bell tower of this same sanctuary. In addition, there are pots, sherds, grinding stones, stone axes and other artifacts and utensils left as a trace of the presence of various cultures of the area such as: Panzaleos, Incas, Chimbus, among others.

In another section of this museum there is a replica of the Turin blanket, which is a natural-sized photograph, there are other photographs, representing the life passion and death of Jesus.

There is a collection of garments worn by the priests who served in the Shrine, the clothing of Monsignor Candido Rada, among others. Between the main chapels and sacred places, one has:

• The Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament: where there is a lamp whose light never goes out as a sign of its presence. In this chapel is placed the life-size wooden picture representing the Lord's Last Supper.

• The Chapel of Forgiveness: it is the place where priests attend believers who wish to purify their conscience.

• The Sacristy: it is the place where are kept ornaments, sacred vessels, liturgical books, censers and other objects necessary for religious celebrations.

• The Chapel and the altarpiece of the Baptism of Jesus: this is a nave located to the right of the Sanctuary, the Chapel of Baptism there is a picture that recalls the moment when Jesus receives baptism, this picture is carved of wood and is of size natural.

• The altarpiece of the main altar: this one was designed by the Italian sculpture Ana Maccagno, it is four meters wide by seven high, it is of red cedar, a symbolic altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Natividad del Guayco. This one represents a gigantic organ that, adorned with volutes and spirals, raises the harmony of the plague upwards.

• Table and Chapel of the Resurrection: it is a concrete building, it is located in the center of the portal that leaves of the main church of the right, in her, it represents the Calvary Mount to the right and the tomb of the Lord to the left .

• Grotto and Image of the Virgin: it is in front of the Chapel of the Resurrection, in the left portal that leaves the Church, it is built with concrete and stone with natural aspect. This cave was excavated on the slope of the hill that descends in that place, inside it has been placed natural and artificial plants and flowers, there is the image of the Virgin and the Indigenous Maria Luz Chela.

In this place there are two wells of water in which the faithful deposit coins, and is visited to ask or to thank for favors or miracles.

• Cross of the Guayco: it is located to the south east side of the Sanctuary, to reach it, it is necessary to cross by stairs that meander in the middle of a thick Eucalyptus forest. The Cross is 22 meters high by 10 meters wide and was completed in 1988.

Legend of the Creation of the Sanctuary of Guayco
It was remote on September 8, 1708, when a descendant of Chela Chiefs of the Pacatones bias, was brutally beaten by her mother, who thought that her thirteen-year-old daughter Maria de la Luz was having a romance, punishment In such a way, that it caused some trauma to him in the whole body and the rupture of the head.

Maria de la Luz, with still bleeding wounds, took refuge in the Guayco ravine, as she usually did and returned to her house shortly with her completely healed wounds and no footprints, which indicated that she had never been Wounded, seeing his mother asked him who had healed his wounds and the little girl answered that a beautiful lady had healed him using the water that came from the rock, astonished the mother of what he had told was where the priest of the place , Immediately went to the place where Mary of Light took them and they found an image of the Virgin Mary, at whose feet a thread of crystalline water sprouted.

The miracle spread quickly, the sick began to arrive at this place to be healed of their ailments. After some time a chapel was built.
